On a bit of a whim earlier this week we decided, seeing as Tim had the week off, to have a night away somewhere. As is often the case with last minute ideas, anywhere we wanted to stay was either booked up or ridiculously expensive being school half term holidays, so inspiration struck and we thought “Ah! The tent!”
We wanted to head back to Cornwall this year at some point as we went there for our honeymoon 10 years ago. It's a bit of a drive from our part of the world but not out of the question, however two nights made the trip more worthwhile than one. So, with our lovely neighbour able to feed the cat and tortoise we headed off on Thursday.
We arrived at our campsite - The Camping Field near Luxulyan / Bodmin (pre-booked via pitchup.com) which was perfect, lots of space, spotless portaloos (if you are festival people like us you'll know) hot showers and so peaceful. Once the tent was up we chilled out watching swallows and house martins swooping a great speed about a foot off the ground catching insects and goldfinches were everywhere. That evening we drove the short distance to Charlestown - a place we loved on our honeymoon - for a stroll along the coastal path (found two geocaches) and a drink afterwards. The perfect end to a busy day.
On Friday after cooking breakfast on the stove and several cups of coffee we headed over to revisit Port Issac. Such a pretty place, we had a good wander around followed by Tim's favourite activity…rockpooling!
Later that afternoon we headed to my favourite Cornish place, Trebarwith Strand. It is magical and when we first visited a decade ago I took a photo of the sunset over the sea which has earned me a decent amount of money as cards and prints, so I wanted to say a personal thank you. Again, a stroll on the coastal path and drink at The Port William afterwards finished the day off beautifully.
All too soon our little trip was coming to a close, we packed the tent away on Saturday morning between rain showers (managed to pack it dry though….result!) and left The Camping Field, Luxulyan which I highly recommend, it is owned by a lovely chap called Richard and they have a gorgeous campsite cat (just beware of the narrow, winding lane to reach the site…we met a couple of nutters driving like loons 🙄).
On the way home we stopped in at Bude for a pasty and a final walk then made the four hour trip home. What a lovely way to spend a couple of days, it seemed like we were away a lot longer, we packed loads in, and we will be back, lovely Cornwall, I promise.
I keep wanting to go back to Cornwall since I got a campervan, but trying to find park ups worries me. Maybe I should take inspiration from you and just got for it 👍
There certainly were a lot of vans... producing van-envy in us the whole time 😄 maybe out of peak season it isn't as crowded but who knows. Thanks for the tip too 👍🏕️
