Well, as if there was any doubt, autumn is definitely here, we have had some beautiful days, walks and scenery, but also torrential rain and storms, there are more forecast as I write so any outdoor jobs will have to wait, although it is still very mild for the time of year.
We have managed a few bits though, during a dry spell over the weekend we used the hoe and yard broom to dislodge a lot of moss that had spread on the driveway and path. It had got to the stage of being quite slippy and with more wet and freezing weather to come it seemed safer to remove it…hard work though, but better than falling over! At the same time we lugged the wooden bench into the greenhouse for the winter to protect it from the wet and cold - we won't be using it until spring so at least it is safe and dry.
One bonus of the wind is that it dislodges out of reach apples. There are a lot of windfalls under the tree, some are perfectly fine for our table as they have fallen onto soft ground, any that are bruised and battered can stay where they are for the wildlife, an important source of energy as other foods become scarce.
The swedes seem to be doing fine out in the veg patch, the plants look healthy so I'm hoping all is well underground. The potatoes however have died so I am not so confident there - the gamble of gardening. In the greenhouse the carrots are growing well and I have some sweet pea shoots breaking through for next year, this week I will plant the random bulbs…I don't know what they are but it will be fun finding out!
UPDATE: Fat Bear Week was won by the bear called 747 (after the air craft) she was victorious and takes the title ‘til next year's competition.
So, that's it for now, hopefully the rain will stop at some point, although at the moment it seems like it never will. I am looking forward to a walk in the woods soon to see more of this wonderful season.
