Planting, Walking and World Wildlife Day
Hi folks, first an apology for a slight delay in posting anything, I have had a stinking cold and simply haven’t felt inspired enough to do much of anything, I am however coming to the end of this particular lurgy so fingers crossed that will be it for a while!
Well, we are officially in meteorological spring as of March 1st - not that one can really tell by the weather - the garden is starting to sprout more, crocus, ‘tete-a-tete’ daffodils and tulip bulbs are all looking healthy. I have started planting in the greenhouse, seeds that don’t need quite such a high germination temperature to start with such as broad beans, radish and cabbage plus some flowers. We have brought most of the trays into the conservatory for the time being, especially as there is really cold weather / snow forecast for next week…come on spring. On looking this morning we have two kohl-rabi seedlings poking their leaves through, the radish are going mad, and there is a cabbage shoot! These things make me happier than you can probably imagine.
For those of you who know don’t me outside of the Substack bubble, I am constantly in awe of the natural world (hence this newsletter) and I am also a wildlife artist in my own, sometimes slightly weird style. Today is world wildlife day and anything that can trend on social media as such is only a good thing for raising awareness of the glorious planet we live on. Sales from my art helps me donate regularly to wildlife charities if even in a small way, but every little helps!
With getting things started in the garden and the other-half playing gigs we haven’t been out walking much yet this year - except my early morning walks when I haven’t got a cold of course - but we did have need to go out on Sunday and got some air on the Long Mynd. It was very cold and bracing, but stunningly beautiful as always, a very special place for me in many ways.
Hopefully (definitely) the start of things to come, warmer weather and longer days will help us get out and about into the wonderful area we are so lucky to live in.
Oh, and before I go, one of the orchids had bloomed so I thought I would share it…the other plants have flower spikes so fingers crossed there will be more soon.
Take care folks.
