As I write this, it is pouring with rain after a day of very warm sunshine. We have done lots in one small bed of the garden which had become quite overgrown with weeds and alpine strawberries, the runners of which ran far and wide. Now the fruits have slowed we decided to pull them up…they will be back next year whether we want them or not! After clearing the ground and pruning the plants we wanted to keep, including roses, Heather and thrift it was off to the garden centre for bark chips. We haven't used them much in the garden, but I have to say it looks great, really makes the green leaves and pink / purple flowers zing.
Yesterday was our wedding anniversary, we decided to have a lazy day, a slow morning of pottering around in the garden, coffee, then a walk before settling down to a binge-watch of Games of Thrones…again! For the walk we went up into the forest, it was a cloudy day but humid and warm so it was quite tiring. I think the forest is amazing in any weather to be honest, the sounds and smells change with sun or cloud, dry and wet, morning or evening.
On one stretch of road, we noticed the vetch coming into flower, pale blossoms with purple veins on multi-leaved stems running throughout the undergrowth. Related to the pea family, vetch was once a vital food source in times gone by, it grows small pods which are full of protein which is why it was grown as a food source across Europe, evidence has been found in archaeological sites in Turkey and Egypt too.
The other edible delights that will be plentiful this autumn are nuts and berries, hazel trees are bowered with young nuts ready to ripen…(there will be a lot of happy squirrels around) and blackberries are staring to show for the birds…and for us.
Anyway, we are now nearly at the end of season 7, Westeros is the place to be so I shall watch some more, after a busy day we deserve it.
