Autumn is definitely here, and I love it! Last night we had the first frost in our part of the country, I could hear car windscreens being scraped first thing this morning…the husband would not have been happy, he is not a fan of the cold and it only foreshadows the impending clock change and dark winter days. I prefer to focus on cosy blankets, slow-cooker stews and soft jumpers.
It was a chilly but sunny day yesterday with blue skies and clear views, so our Sunday walk was a pleasure. The forest smells of autumn now, earthy and slightly damp with a peace falling across the trees. Squirrels have been very busy stripping the beech, hazel and oak trees of their nuts, berries are weighing down the branches of hawthorn and brambles giving the woodland a speckled red tint.
Even though everything is winding down for a winter rest, there are still birds singing in the sunshine, they will be well fed with berries and rose hips that are now abundant. Life carries on all year in the forest of course, with new shoots waiting to sprout, fungi clinging to wood and water carving new channels through the ground.
Hopefully we will get more glorious autumnal strolls before winter sets in properly…although I love walking in winter too. Get out and see, smell, tough and breathe in autumn in all its glory!
