Our evenings are lighter, the air is warmer, so yesterday we did our first AWW (as Tim calls it) an after work walk. The best part of the day was early evening after very stormy, windy, wet weather, so before we ate, we put on our big coats and headed out to stretch the legs and free the mind. Along the river the wild garlic is out and looking so pretty, it is such a sign of spring with it’s dainty white flowerheads and gorgeous scent, I predict some foraging at the weekend.
Shortly after I took this photo, we had to shelter from a brief hail storm…typical of UK spring! It didn’t last long, and the air smelled so fresh but I was glad of my hood for a while.
We had a fantastic, busy weekend in the garden as the weather was on our side, and it was World Gardening Day on Sunday so a couple of dry days meant we could get out and prep one of the veg beds, clear weeds, mow the lawns and tidy up plus the new compost area is now in place.
A lot of veg seeds have either failed to germinate completely after several tries this year, or have only sprouted a few potential plants, but I think there will be enough to keep us fed if they all continue to grow. Flower seeds have performed much better however, so the garden should be colourful and good for pollinators, sunflower, cosmos and sweet peas have done really well.
Another joy is the apple area, blossom so beautiful it cant help but bring a smile. The old cooking apple tree has flowers and the dwarf gala and step-overs are covered so fingers crossed for lovely fruit later in the year.
There are jobs lined up for this coming weekend if the elements are kind, so full steam ahead!
